Foot Anstey
A national commercial law firm offering broad trainee experience, early client contact and particular strengths in finance, restructuring and charity legacy disputes.

About Foot Anstey
Foot Anstey is a national law firm with roots in the South West and a growing presence across England and Northern Ireland. Its work centres on seven sectors: charities, developers, energy and infrastructure, Islamic finance, private equity, private wealth, and retail and consumer. These sectors bring together transactional, advisory and contentious work, allowing lawyers from different disciplines to support the same client’s business.
For prospective trainees, the firm combines a conventional seat rotation with opportunities to understand clients’ businesses directly. Its Virtual Trainee Programme and client secondments provide experience of the priorities and practical pressures facing in-house legal teams.
The England and Wales training contract comprises four six-month seats across different teams. Trainees work closely with partners and senior lawyers, with support from the Early Careers team. The programme includes early client exposure through secondment opportunities and the Virtual Trainee Programme.
Through the Virtual Trainee Programme, trainees provide legal support to a client alongside their departmental work, developing experience of an in-house adviser’s role. This can help trainees understand how legal advice fits into wider operational and commercial decisions.
Foot Anstey sponsors SQE and PGDL course fees and provides maintenance grants. Current published grants are £9,000 for the PGDL and £12,000 for SQE study.
