Irwin Mitchell
A national full-service law firm combining leading personal injury and medical negligence practices with private client and commercial advice for businesses.

About Irwin Mitchell
Irwin Mitchell advises individuals, families and businesses through a national office network. Its personal legal services include medical negligence, serious injury, family law, private wealth, public law and Court of Protection work. Its business practice covers corporate transactions, employment, property, disputes and other commercial matters.
This combination allows the firm to support clients through connected legal needs. A serious injury claim, for example, may lead to advice on managing compensation, care arrangements and financial protection. Business clients may need support across transactions, employment and property.
For prospective trainees, the important distinction is between its Legal Services for Individuals and Business Services Group streams. Applicants choose their stream and office, shaping the work they experience during training.
The two-year training contract has four seats within the chosen stream and location. Legal Services for Individuals trainees complete three training seats and a repeat seat, usually in the department where qualification is anticipated. Business Services Group trainees complete four different seats according to business needs.
Individual services include injury, medical negligence, private client and public law work. Business seats can include corporate, employment, banking, commercial disputes and real estate.
From 2027, future trainees complete the SQE before starting their training contract. Required study fees are funded, with maintenance support during study. Non-law graduates can receive PGDL funding through BPP if they have not started the course when offered a contract, alongside a grant of £1,000 per month of study. Funding is not retrospective.

The application process
Click on each stage to find out more.
Applications opened on 12 October 2026 and close on 1 December 2026. Current advertised opportunities cover 2028 starts in the Business Services Group and 2028 or 2029 starts in Legal Services for Individuals.
Choose your stream and office carefully. Research the teams available in that location and explain to yourself why their work fits your interests before registering.
The initial application is a short registration form covering personal details and academics. The firm uses blind screening, with this information withheld from assessors. The assessment and video responses therefore provide the main opportunity to demonstrate your motivation and potential.
Prepare examples showing client care, collaboration, judgement and adaptability. For individual services, consider how you would communicate clearly with someone facing a difficult situation. For business services, understand how legal advice supports a client’s commercial objectives.
