About Paul Hastings

Paul Hastings was founded in Los Angeles in 1951 and has developed an international network spanning the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Its London office advises investment banks, asset managers and corporations, with particular strengths in financing transactions and private capital. The practice brings together English and New York law lending expertise, high-yield bonds, structured credit, investment funds and restructuring, alongside corporate, regulatory and contentious work. This makes the firm particularly relevant to applicants interested in how businesses and investment funds raise, deploy and restructure capital. London lawyers collaborate with colleagues across the international network on cross-border transactions, while the office also handles commercial litigation, arbitration, investigations and technology-related matters.

Paul Hastings recruits approximately 12 trainees annually for a two-year training contract comprising four six-month seats. Departments available include capital markets, corporate, finance, funds, employment, litigation, real estate, restructuring and tax. Trainees receive practical training alongside external courses, with progress reviewed through mid-seat and end-of-seat evaluations. Client secondments may be available where business needs permit; they are opportunities rather than a guaranteed part of the programme. Trainees are also supported by an associate mentor and the Talent Management team.

The firm covers PGDL and SQE fees and provides maintenance support. The firm offers a £15,000 PGDL maintenance grant for London and a £20,000 SQE grant. Training also includes opportunities to contribute to pro bono work and community initiatives. At qualification, trainees express their preferred department to Talent Management during their fourth seat; Chambers Student reports that an interview may be required depending on the team..
