About Walker Morris

Walker Morris is an independent single-office firm based entirely in Leeds, founded in 1981. It works nationally but is not part of a network and has no London office.

Its strongest work is real estate, commercial dispute resolution, corporate and banking, and construction and infrastructure, acting for national developers, investors and lenders.

For a one-office firm its graduate recruitment is large: 52 vacation scheme places. Pay is £34,000 in the first year and £37,000 in the second, with newly qualified solicitors on £67,000, which is low next to London figures against living costs a long way below London's.

The seat structure has a feature no other firm here offers. Trainees move seats every four months rather than every six, which over two years means six seats rather than four. Trainees choose their second-year seats. And the final seat is the one they qualify into.

At most firms, qualification is a separate process at the end of the training contract: applying for newly qualified roles, often in competition with your own cohort, often while finishing the last seat. Here the last seat is the answer. A trainee arrives at it having chosen it, and stays.

That removes an uncertain stage from the end of the training contract, and for some people it is the single best reason to choose this firm.

Funding is full SQE course and examination fees plus a £7,000 maintenance grant, and full PGDL course fees plus another £7,000 grant for non-law graduates, which is £14,000 in total for someone taking both.

31 DecSummer VS deadline

There are two routes, seven months apart, so which one a candidate is going for needs settling first. The vacation scheme route closes at the end of December; the direct training contract route closes at the end of the following July. Both are real, so missing the December window does not end a candidate's chances for the cycle. With 52 scheme places from a single office, the scheme route offers better odds than almost anywhere else. The written application needs to be aimed at an independent Leeds firm: Walker Morris has no London office and is not part of a network, so treating Leeds as a fallback does not convince. Its strongest work is real estate, commercial disputes, corporate and banking.

Walker Morris: quick answers

How much does Walker Morris pay trainees?

Walker Morris pays first-year trainees £34,000, rising to £37,000 in the second year. Newly qualified solicitors at Walker Morris earn £67,000.

When is the Walker Morris vacation scheme deadline?

Vacation scheme route closes 31 Dec 2025 · direct training contract route closes 31 Jul 2026 · scheme runs five days in April or June Deadlines can change and popular schemes may close early, so check the live application deadlines tracker.

What tests does Walker Morris use in its applications?

Walker Morris uses online cognitive testing, sat in January after the application form and before the assessment centre. Cognitive testing covers reasoning and problem-solving ability rather than situational judgement, so verbal, numerical and logical reasoning practice under time pressure is the preparation that applies. The firm does not name a provider. Because the test sits in a defined window between two other stages, a candidate knows it is coming and has time to prepare, which is not true at firms that bundle testing into an assessment day. Direct training contract applicants should confirm whether the same testing applies on their route, since the firm publishes the sequence mainly for the scheme route.
